What is Toastmasters?
Toastmasters International is a world leader in communication and leadership development. There are thousands of clubs around the world meeting every day. Some clubs are found at companies and some are open to the community like ours. Here is a great introductory quote:
Can I come as a guest to Los Gatos Toastmasters?
Absolutely! Our meetings are open to visitors, and we love welcoming new guests. Whether you’re curious about improving your speaking skills or just want to see what Toastmasters is all about, you’re invited to join us and experience it firsthand.
I’m visiting Los Gatos Toastmasters for the first time. Do I need to participate?
Visiting a club is an exciting first step in reaching your goals. There’s no need to feel pressure to participate at your first club meeting – you can simply observe if you wish. And since every club is unique, it’s OK to visit several clubs before you decide to join the right club for you. Have a great first meeting!
I get nervous speaking in front of people – should I still come?
Definitely. That’s exactly why Toastmasters exists! You’ll learn proven techniques to calm your nerves, organize your thoughts, and speak with confidence. Plus, everyone in the room understands what that nervousness feels like, we’ve all been there.
I’m not a native English speaker, do you have ESL members?
Yes! Silicon Valley has wonderful diversity and we are proud to learn from and grow with our ESL members. Many of our members are ESL speakers who use Toastmasters to gain fluency, confidence, and ease when speaking in English. It’s a safe, encouraging space to practice and grow.
What’s a Toastmaster’s meeting like?
A Toastmasters meeting follows a consistent agenda so members feel comfortable knowing what to expect each week. You’ll experience,
- Two to four member speeches, followed by supportive evaluations and feedback.
- Members also take on roles—like Timer, Ah-Counter, or Grammarian—that help the meeting run smoothly while also giving them valuable speaking practice and leadership experience.
- Table Topics (our fun think-on-your-feet segment) happens earlier in the meeting. Guests are always welcome to participate in Table Topics!
- We close with brief reports from our functionary roles.
What does it cost to join Los Gatos Toastmasters?
Los Gatos Toastmasters collect member dues of $120 every 6 months. Dues cover Toastmasters International program and Pathways curriculum and our room rental costs. If you are a brand new member you are also charged a $25 new member fee. You only have to pay the new member fee once per lifetime so if you belong to a second club (Dual Membership) or have a lapse in membership (Reinstated Membership) you don’t need to pay the new member fee. We email Square invoices or accept checks for dues.
Do you meet at other times or locations?
We only meet on Tuesday evenings at 6:30pm. Our meeting locations may change especially in the summer months where we like to take advantage of the long daylight and get outside. We have conducted outdoor meetings all around town.
